Our Afrikan Ancestors and Ancestresses used smudge and incense cleansing in their temples, in their villages, and in their homes. You can use smudge sticks, loose leaves smudges, incense sticks, incense cones, or other forms of smoke cleansers. A variety of plants can be used for smudges or incense including sage, lavender, frankincense, myrrh, aloe vera and cinnamon.

You can cleanse as many times a day or week you prefer. Cleanse in the morning while making tea. Cleanse during the work day, Cleanse before going to bed. You should definitely cleanse items before placing them on your alter. Cleanse before and after guest you have people in your home, including delivery or maintenance people. Cleanse after arguments or disagreements with loved ones to clear any bad feelings and tension.

Smudges and incenses are effective air purifiers, they can be used to clear your aura, energy & space. They can also be used for spiritual cleansing for your home, business, or other areas you find yourself inhabiting. You should use smudges or incenses to cleanse yourself & anyone with you before you begin meditation or go to alter. Hold the smoke near your head, arms, feet, and your Aura. Run the smudge/incense through the air in the shape of an Ankh.

When cleansing, it helps to have music, such as Afrikan drums, playing. You can also hum or sing Afrikan songs. You could alternately chant Afrikan words such as Ankh, Asè, or Hetep, You should demand that unwanted/ evil spirits to leave. Be sure to cleanse all corners, closets, under beds, desks, & tables. Have either an open window, a fan blowing away from you, or the A/C on.

Always use a heat resistant container such as an abalone shell, a clay bowl, cup, incense holder. Hold the smudge or incense away from you face, clothes, and any flammable objects. Light incense or smudge until they catch fire & lightly blow out or let it go out by itself. To extinguish, you can let the incense or smudge burn out, press it out in the container on the burning side, or put it out with few drops of water ( if water is used must be let dry before re-lighting). Make sure fire is out before discarding ashes.
